Using the Pulse Bow to attack
Target Dummies. Note how the ricochet causes the bolt to pierce fewer enemies.
The Pulse Bow is a Hardmode bow that can be purchased from the Traveling Merchant for 45 GC after defeating all three mechanical bosses. When used, it converts any type of arrow into a high-velocity blue bolt. The bolt is unaffected by gravity, can either pierce enemies or bounce off blocks up to five times, and travels for 3.5 seconds (about 480 tiles) before dissipating. The Pulse Bow also has a base 11% critical strike chance as opposed to the usual 4%.
Its best modifier is Unreal.
Notes
- The Traveling Merchant will use it for self-defense once a world is in Hardmode.
- The damage of the Pulse Bow's bolt is reduced each time it hits an enemy or ricochets.
- When piercing an enemy, its damage is reduced by 20%.[1] For example, after piercing five enemies, the projectile will only deal 27 base damage (if used with Wooden Arrows) to the sixth and final enemy. This is only 33.75% of the original damage to the first enemy.
- When ricocheting off a block, its damage is reduced by 10%.[2]
- The Pulse Bow's bolts are unaffected by liquids.
- When the Pulse Bow is fired against a hammered slope, the bolt will hug the slope and follow it up, instead of ricocheting off, and shoot out at the end of the slope with the same incident angle. The height of the slope which the bolt can climb is limited.
Tips
- Its piercing and ricochet abilities make it useful in confined spaces, such as the Dungeon.
- If shot at the right angle, the Pulse Bow's projectiles can ricochet through one-block walls. This appears to happen when the projectile hits a block at an entry angle of 40 to 50° and is easier to pull off when first bouncing the projectile off of another surface. This useful trick can be used in many situations to attack enemies behind cover.
- Because the Pulse Bow cancels additional arrow effects, damage is the only factor that should be considered in choosing an arrow type. The highest base damage of 99 can be achieved with Venom Arrows.
- The Endless Quiver will work as usual, allowing the Pulse Bow to fire bolts indefinitely.
Trivia
- The Pulse Bow's color scheme is similar to that of Shroomite equipment.
