The Combat Wrench is a pre-Hardmode, post-Skeletron boomerang that has a 1/8 (12.5%) chance of being dropped by the Mechanic. It can pierce multiple targets before returning.

Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount. However, Ruthless might be preferred if the player already has very high critical strike chance.

Notes

  • The Combat Wrench applies 7 ticks[1] of global immunity frames upon hit.[2]
  • The Combat Wrench can travel for 0.25 seconds before it starts decelerating, and eventually turning around to return towards the player. This results in having a maximum range of roughly 17.9 tiles.[3]
    • Melee speed bonuses increase the boomerang's velocity, which in turn increases its range.
      • Conversely, liquids will slow down the boomerang and reduce its range.
    • Unlike most other boomerangs which instantly turn around after hitting enemies, Combat Wrench has to gradually decelerate first.
    • As soon as the boomerang begins decelerating, it gains infinite piercing and becomes capable of going through solid tiles. This allows it to hit enemies multiple times and slightly penetrate into tiles.
  • The Combat Wrench has a top speed of 92 mph when returning to the player, and can only exist for up to 30 seconds before despawning. It will also despawn if its distance from the player is more than 187.5 tiles.
  • This content is transcluded from NPCs/dropnote.Since town NPCs cannot be damaged by players normally, external damage sources must be used to obtain this item. The Flymeal(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) is one of the easiest options; other effective options include traps, lava, drowning, Boulders or Rolling Cacti(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), enemies, Explosive Bunnies, Land Mines, or the Halloween-exclusive Rotten Eggs (in tandem with Frost armor).
Attacking Target Dummies with the Combat Wrench. Note how the wrench returns immediately when hitting blocks.

Trivia

  • The Mechanic uses the Combat Wrench to defend herself.
  • While holding the Combat Wrench, it will appear on the player's back, similar to the appearance of the Mechanic.

  1. A tick is a time unit countable by the software. Most of Terraria's updating logic happens every tick. A tick has the length of 1/60th of a second, hence there are 60 ticks in a second and 3600 ticks in a minute.
