The Storm Spear being used on Target Dummies.

The Storm Spear is a pre-Hardmode spear that can be found in Sandstone Chests in the lower 3/7ths of the Underground Desert and in Oasis Crates and Mirage Crates obtained from fishing in the Oasis. When thrust, it fires an electric bolt that deals 150% of the weapon's damage (21 base damage) and inflicts 50% its knockback (base knockback of 3 (Very weak)).[1] The bolt does not pierce enemies or pass through blocks.

Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount. However, Ruthless might be preferred if the player already has very high critical strike chance.

Notes

  • The bolt projectile can travel for 0.2 seconds before disappearing.[2]
  • The Storm Spear has a maximum range of approximately 6.74 tiles.[1]
    • Melee speed bonuses can slightly increase its range, in addition to increasing its attack speed and projectile fire rate. They also allow the bolt projectile to travel faster and further.

Tips

  • Due to its high attack rate when direct contact is made with the spear, it proves to be quite an effective early-game weapon.
    • It is also one of the first projectile melee weapons one can get access to, on par with the Ice Blade.
  • When standing close a one-tile thick wall, the Storm Spear Shot can sometimes be shot through the wall.
    • The higher melee speed a player has, the further distance they can shoot through walls, even being able to reach up to 3-block thick walls with enough melee speed.
  • In Don't dig up worlds, the Storm Spear can be obtained from the lower Chests that spawn below the Underground Desert walls with much less risk.
  • If a Sandstone Chest contains a Thunder Zapper or Bast Statue as its primary item, the player is low enough to obtain the Storm Spear. Otherwise, they need to dig lower before they have a chance of finding one.

Trivia

  • It can be considered the melee counterpart to the Thunder Zapper.
