The Lunar Flare attacking Target Dummies. Note how it possesses the unique ability to pass through blocks.

The Lunar Flare is a Hardmode spell book that has a 2/9 (22.22%) chance of being dropped by the Moon Lord. When used, it summons a spread of three lunar flares that rain down towards the cursor. The flares explode upon impact with enemies and blocks, but can pass through blocks until they have reached the cursor's location, then exploding.

Its best modifier is Mythical.

Notes

  • The Lunar Flare's projectiles emit a significant amount of light, but not when passing through solid blocks.
  • The Lunar Flare's projectiles apply -1 ticks[1] of local invincibility frames upon hit, which means each projectile cannot damage the same target more than once.[2]
  • The Lunar Flare's explosions can damage enemies within 4.375 tiles horizontally and vertically of the point of impact.[3]

Trivia

  • Its name parodies the solar flare, a real-life astronomical phenomenon.

  1. A tick is a time unit countable by the software. Most of Terraria's updating logic happens every tick. A tick has the length of 1/60th of a second, hence there are 60 ticks in a second and 3600 ticks in a minute.

  3. Information taken from the Desktop version Desktop 1.4.4.9 source code, method AI_001() in Terraria.Projectile.cs. The explosion covers a square of 8.75×8.75 tiles centered on the point of impact.
