Attacking with the Kaleidoscope.

The Kaleidoscope is a Hardmode, post-Plantera whip that has a 1/4 (25%) chance of being dropped by the Empress of Light.

Like other whips, it causes minions and sentries to focus on the last-struck enemy and increases their damage against the target by 20 for 4 seconds. Uniquely, it also grants minions and sentries the ability to deal critical hits to struck targets for 4 seconds at a fixed 10% chance.

If the Kaleidoscope hits multiple targets in a single attack, the damage dealt by each consecutive hit will be reduced by 10%. Enemies tagged by the Kaleidoscope also emit multicolored sparkles when hit by a minion or sentry for as long as they are tagged.

Its best modifier is Legendary.

Notes

  • Critical strike chance bonuses granted for summon weapons are treated as independent events instead of additive values.[1] These bonuses include Morning Star, Kaleidoscope, and set bonuses from Monk armor and Shinobi Infiltrator armor.
    • For example, when using Kaleidoscope with Lightning Aura and wearing Monk armor or Shinobi Infiltrator armor, the final critical strike chance would be about 25% (Monk armor) / 32.5% (Shinobi Infiltrator armor).

Tips

  • The Morning Star and Kaleidoscope have the unique ability to grant minions the ability to deal critical hits. Though the boost is relatively low, it is nevertheless a noticeable increase in damage, especially with a large number of minions. Both whips can also be stacked to further increase critical strike chance.
  • Due to its high base damage, range, tag damage, and extra summon tag critical strike chance, it is arguably the most powerful whip in the game.
    • However, the speed boost and dark energy from the Dark Harvest may be preferable in certain situations.
    • The Firecracker can also outperform it against single targets, especially when used with the Stardust Dragon.
  • The Kaleidoscope's large range and bright particles can make it useful for finding caves or exploring underground.
  • The Kaleidoscope synergizes very well with the Blade Staff, because of the Kaleidoscope's high summon tag damage.

Trivia

  • A kaleidoscope is an optical device that uses reflecting surfaces to create regular, symmetrical, and usually very colorful patterns when one looks into it.
  • Unlike most other rainbow-themed weapons, the Kaleidoscope does not have secret color themes for developers and beta testers.
  • It is the only weapon dropped by the Empress of Light that does not resemble any of her attacks.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.1:
    • Damage increased from 165 to 180.
    • Range increased.
    • Damage penalty for each additional target hit per swing reduced from 15% to 10%.
