The Vilethorn is a pre-Hardmode wand. It has a 1/5 (20%) chance of being obtained from destroying Shadow Orbs found in the Corruption or a 1/5 (20%) chance from Corrupt Crates(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) and Defiled Crates(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions), which are fished in the Corruption. When used, it extends a 15-tile-long thorn from the player's position, which passes through blocks, pierces infinite enemies, and hits rapidly for up to six times per enemy. The thorn lasts roughly 1.5 seconds.

Its best modifier is Ruthless. While Mythical gives a wider array of bonuses, damage rounding causes Ruthless to deal more DPS.

Tips

• The Vilethorn inflicts very minor knockback for each hit, which can stun-lock enemies.
• The Vilethorn is the earliest weapon available that consistently travels through blocks.
• It is mana-efficient for its damage potential. With appropriate modifiers and accessories, it is possible to recover full mana between shots if the player stands still, allowing for sustained fire.
• Its piercing attack makes it useful against worm enemies. Bosses with multiple parts, such as the Eater of Worlds or the Brain of Cthulhu's first stage, are also vulnerable.

Trivia

• The Vilethorn is the counterpart to The Crimson's Crimson Rod.
• Until the release of 1.2, the Vilethorn was unique in its ability to attack through blocks. However, other similar weapons have been introduced since then, such as the Nettle Burst and Crystal Vile Shard(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions).
