The Onyx Blaster in action.

The Onyx Blaster is a Hardmode gun and the direct upgrade to the Shotgun. When used, it fires a spread of 4 bullets, consuming one piece of ammunition. It also fires an onyx crystal that explodes upon impact with an enemy or a block, or after traveling for 0.33 seconds.[1] The projectile deals 200% of the weapon's damage, e.g. 62 damage when using Musket Ball.

Its best modifier is Unreal.

Notes

Tips

  • The Onyx Blaster can be crafted before defeating any of the mechanical bosses, and it is effective against many early Hardmode bosses.
  • It can one-shot many common Hardmode enemies, and the explosion is particularly devastating against worm enemies, being capable of one-shotting even a Dune Splicer.

Trivia

A close up of the onyx blast.
  • Onyx is a real-life black gemstone.
  • This is one of a small "set" of weapons made with two shards apiece, the other members being the Sky Fracture and the Dao of Pow. Their recipes, names and appearances link the weapons to themes of Darkness, Light, and Balance, with the Onyx Blaster representing Darkness. The set also includes one weapon for each of the three "classic" damage types (melee, magic, and ranged), where the Onyx Blaster is the ranged weapon.
  • According to lead developer Yoraiz0r, the design of the Onyx Blaster was directly inspired by the dark, "evil" half of Monokuma, the main antagonist of the Japanese video game series Danganronpa.[5]
  • It is one of two firearms in Terraria to feature an operating secondary gun, the other being the Vortex Beater.
  • The purple stripes on the Onyx Blaster appear to glow while the weapon is being used.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.1:
    • Damage decreased from 28 to 24.
    • Use time increased from 45 to 48.
