(Old-gen console and 3DS versions) The Gungnir being used to attack Target Dummies.

The Gungnir is a Hardmode, post-one mechanical boss spear. (Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) When thrust, it creates a small shockwave at its tip.

Its best modifier is Godly or Demonic. Both modifiers increase the average damage output by the same amount. However, Ruthless might be preferred if the player already has very high critical strike chance.

Notes

  • Including the shockwave at end of spear, Gungnir has a maximum range of approximately 16.76 tiles.[1]
    • This is the longest reach out of any spear, not counting the additional projectiles fired by Chlorophyte Partisan and North Pole.
    • Melee speed bonuses can increase its range, in addition to increasing its attack speed.

Trivia

  • In Norse mythology, Gungnir is the spear of the god Odin, said to never miss once it is thrown.
  • Prior to the 1.2.3 update, the Gungnir had a sell value of 30 GC, the highest in the game – this meant reforging a Godly Gungnir prior to 1.2 (where reforging value was reduced from 5 times the item's sell value down to half) cost 3 PC17 GC44 SC50 CC.

History

  • Desktop 1.4.4:
    • Damage increased from 42 to 61.
    • Now generates a shockwave at the end of the spear.
