Vortex armor is a Hardmode, post-Moon Lord ranged armor set consisting of the Vortex Helmet, Vortex Breastplate, and Vortex Leggings. Crafting the full set requires a total of 36 Luminite Bars (144 Luminite) and 45 Vortex Fragments.

The full set grants the following effects while equipped:

Moving or grappling does not cancel stealth mode, but dashing[2] or riding a mount[3] does. Taking damage reveals the player and removes the stealth mode bonuses, and it takes another 0.42 seconds to fully engage stealth mode again.[4]

As a result of the aggro reduction while in stealth, enemies will prefer to target other players, and many kinds of enemies will not chase after the player while they are not using items (see Aggro § Target chasing for details).

Notes

  • The set bonus key can be set from ▼ Down to ▲ Up in the settings.
  • While in stealth mode, the player's movement speed on ground will be greatly reduced. However, when flying, it will only decrease the acceleration, and the top flying speed is unchanged.
  • Vortex armor's stealth mode cannot be stacked with that of the Psycho Knife. If both items are used, the player can only receive stat changes from the Psycho Knife.
    • The only exception is the knockback bonus, which is always granted as long as the player is in stealth mode. For example, when using the Psycho Knife with the Vortex armor, the player will gain +100% melee knockback and +50% ranged knockback at the same time when in stealth mode. However, this has little use in actual combat.[5]
  • NPCs will not attempt to "talk" to (i.e. show emotes to) players that are in stealth mode.[6]
  • Equipping Vortex armor causes the player to emit teal light. The light radius increases with the number of pieces equipped, but none is emitted in stealth mode.

Tips

  • The player will be completely invisible in stealth mode when the Familiar set is equipped, or when using Shadow Dye. This can be helpful in PvP.
  • Stealth mode is not disabled through the use of wings. Additionally, equipping a pair of wings with the Soaring Insignia completely negates the negatives of the set bonus, as stealth mode only decreases ground mobility.

Trivia

Early Vortex Armor.png
Early Vortex armor design
  • The current sprite of the Vortex armor has changed from an earlier design shown in spoilers, featuring a larger helmet and more teal-colored parts.
  • Out of the four armor sets made from Luminite, Vortex armor is the only one without an associated buff. However, its stealth mode can be considered a similar mechanic.
