Plant

Pumpkin growth stages.

Pumpkin plants can be planted manually on pure and Hallowed grass (including the mowed versions) with Pumpkin Seeds, which are sold by the Dryad. They also grow naturally on the Surface during the Halloween seasonal event. Pumpkin plants can be harvested using almost any weapon or tool, which causes Pumpkin items to drop.

Pumpkin Seeds need a clear space of at least 2×2 tiles to be planted.

Harvesting fully grown Pumpkins during the Halloween season will rarely yield a Magical Pumpkin Seed, which is used to summon the Squashling pet.

Notes

  • New Pumpkin plants spawning naturally have certain restrictions:
    • They can only spawn during Halloween, only above the surface, and only on pure and Hallowed grass. They cannot spawn naturally on mowed grass or any other type of grass.
    • The density limit of naturally spawned Pumpkins in a 200×200-tile square is six. New Pumpkin plants can only spawn naturally at a given location if there are at most five other Pumpkins (no matter if naturally spawned as well or player-placed) within 100 tiles horizontally and vertically from that location.[1]
    • Unlike some other plants that grow on grass, new Pumpkin plants can spawn naturally in front of all background walls.
  • Pumpkin growth consists of five stages. Once planted or spawned naturally, a Pumpkin plant slowly advances through the stages over time (year-round, even outside of Halloween). A Pumpkin plant will not yield Pumpkins during the first two stages (i.e., while it is fully green). More Pumpkins will be harvested in later stages:[2]
Stage Drop chance Drop amount Avg. yield
1 n/a
2 n/a
3 1/2 (50%) 1–2 0.75
4 100% 2–5 3.5
5 100% 5–10 7.5
  • Pumpkins planted below the surface do not grow at all. They will remain in the first growth stage.
  • Harvesting Pumpkins will not yield Pumpkin Seeds.
  • Fully grown Pumpkins are destroyed when hitting them with a weapon, tool, or projectile.[3]
  • Pumpkin plants (in any growth stage) are destroyed when one or both of their soil blocks is mined, actuated, swapped, or converted to non-pure/Hallowed grass by biome spread or the Clentaminator/Terraformer.
    • For example, the evil biome will dislodge Pumpkin plants when it converts the grass directly below them. The spread of the Hallow, on the other hand, will not affect Pumpkin plants.
    • The destroyed Pumpkin plant in these cases still drops items normally.
    • The grass beneath a Pumpkin plant can be mowed with the Lawn Mower without harvesting the Pumpkin, provided it is still growing. Fully grown Pumpkin plants will be destroyed by the Lawn Mower, like any other tool.
  • Newly created worlds during Halloween are generated with a large number of Pumpkin plants in random growth stages.[4]

Tips

  • Making a new world during Halloween can give the player an advantage in the early game, as Pumpkins spawn naturally during the season, and the Pumpkin armor made from them provides a relatively high defense of 7, and 10% increased damage on top.
  • Growing Pumpkins from seeds is not profitable; during Halloween, naturally-spawned pumpkins are best sold as candelabras.

History

  • Desktop 1.3.4.2: Fixed a bug where pumpkin plants got cut when swinging nearby items or projectiles at them.
  • 3DS-Release: Introduced alongside all corresponding furniture and items up to Desktop 1.2.4.
