The Iron Crate is a pre-Hardmode crate that can be obtained by fishing in any biome, at any height. It is the middle tier of standard crate. Its Hardmode counterpart is the Mythril Crate.

Only one type of item out of the ores and bars can drop, not both a type of ore and a type of bar. The table above implies otherwise with the ores and the bars being in separate rows, but that is for readability purposes. The chance that a type of ore or bar is dropped is 3/8 (37.5%).
(Desktop, Console and Mobile versions) An Iron Crate will always contain at least one type of item from the first five groups (or any but the last two groups) displayed in the loot table above. This means that at least one type of item from the following list will always drop from an Iron Crate:

Iron Crates have a 27% chance of not initially rolling anything from the above groups, in which case the crate loot is rerolled until one of the above items drops. This means the above items have a 1.37x higher effective drop rate than is listed in the above table.

Trivia

The Falcon Blade, Tartar Sauce, and Ginger Beard can only be obtained by opening Iron and Mythril Crates.
Iron Crates can be obtained in worlds with Lead Ore.

History

Desktop version

Desktop 1.4.4:
- Stack limit increased from 99 to 9999.
- Reduced quantity of dropped ores from 18–29 to 12–21.
- Reduced quantity of dropped bars from 6–9 to 4–7.

Desktop 1.4.0.1:
- Will no longer drop Hardmode items, even if opened after the Wall of Flesh has been defeated in a world.
- Loot tables re-adjusted so that Wooden, Iron, and Golden Crates now drop different metals depending on the level of crate.
