Moon phase 0 (Full Moon) Moon phase 2 (Third Quarter) Moon phase 4 (New Moon) Moon phase 6 (First Quarter)
The Strange Brew is only available during moon phases 1 (Full Moon), 3 (Third Quarter), 5 (New Moon), and 7 (First Quarter).

The Strange Brew is a pre-Hardmode recovery potion that can be purchased from the Skeleton Merchant during certain moon phases for 5 SC. When used, it restores 70–120 health, inflicts 40–70 seconds of Potion Sickness, and has a 3/5 (60%) chance to grant up to 4 seconds of invincibility. The duration of Potion Sickness can be reduced via the Philosopher's Stone or Charm of Myths.

Notes

  • The duration of Potion Sickness can range between 40 seconds and 1 minute 10 seconds. This duration is unrelated to the amount of health restored.[1] For instance, a Strange Brew could only restore 70 health but inflict 70 seconds of Potion Sickness, or it could restore 120 health but only inflict 40 seconds of Potion Sickness.
  • The Strange Brew's chance of granting invincibility frames upon consumption is as follows:[2]
Duration Chance
4 seconds 10%
2 seconds 20%
1 second 30%
No invincibility 40%

Tips

  • The Strange Brew heals an average of 95 health per potion, with an average Potion Sickness duration of 55 seconds. This means that on average, it gives slightly higher[a] (though very similar) healing to a Healing Potion, while having a chance to grant invincibility. However, the Strange Brew is much less consistent than a Healing Potion.[b]

History

  • Desktop 1.4.4:
    • Stack limit increased from 30 to 9999.
    • Now heals randomly between 70 and 120 health, instead of a fixed 80 health.
    • Duration of Potion Sickness is now random, between 40 and 70 seconds, instead of a fixed 60 seconds.
    • Now may give a randomized period of invincibility frames, with longer durations being rarer than shorter ones.
    • No longer restores mana or inflicts Mana Sickness. Previously, it restored 400 mana.

  2. It can vary anywhere from 1.00–3.00 health/second in the worst-case and best-case scenarios.
