Hellstone is a pre-Hardmode ore that can be found in The Underworld. Mining it requires at least a Nightmare/Deathbringer Pickaxe, and it cannot be mined with explosives in pre-Hardmode. Hellstone releases a half-tile of lava when mined in The Underworld.

Hellstone inflicts the Burning debuff on players who touch it, which can be negated through items such as the Obsidian Skull and Obsidian Skin Potion.

Notes

• The Spelunker buff will not highlight Hellstone, and the Metal Detector (and upgrades) will also not detect Hellstone nearby. However, it will be shown by the Dangersense buff.
• NPCs, enemies, and critters do not receive damage from Hellstone.

Tips

• Lava can be farmed by repeatedly mining and placing Hellstone in The Underworld.
• Placing gravity-affected blocks such as Sand Blocks on top of Hellstone will prevent the Hellstone from inflicting damage.

Trivia

• Hellstone, Meteorite, and Luminite are the only ores that do not have "ore" in their names.
• Hellstone is the only ore of which its bar requires another material (Obsidian) in addition to the ore to smelt.
• Hellstone is programmed to have a special immunity to being destroyed in lava, despite its rarity of 02* already preventing it from being destroyed in lava.^[1]
  • This is because before 1.1, it had a rarity of 00*, meaning it would have otherwise been able to be destroyed by lava. When its rarity was increased, the special immunity to lava was not removed.

  • Hellstone can now be destroyed by explosives in Hardmode.
  • Rarity changed from 00* to 02*.

• Desktop 1.0.6:
  • No longer emits light.
  • Now releases lava when mined, but only in the Underworld.

• Desktop 1.0.2:
  • Hellstone and Obsidian now require at least a Nightmare Pickaxe to mine.
  • Hellstone now correctly takes as long to dig as Meteorite does.
