The World Video Game Championship is a live e-sports event that appears in A Minecraft Movie, serving as the inciting incident for Garrett Garrison.

Layout

The event appeared to be set entirely on a small red stage, consisting of two cabinets for Hunk City Rampage played by a single player and a team of two. Between the cabinets are a stand for a trophy, in front of turquoise curtains decorated with cubic arrangements.

History

In 1989, the competition was held in Los Angeles, where the video game Hunk City Rampage was played. A minimum of five players attended, the victor being Garrett Garrison. Now the world champion, this achievement would leave a permanent mark on his psyche, giving him an inflated ego disallowing him from advancing in life for 20 years.

Trivia

  • Although video game competitions were not uncommon during the 1980s, the name and significance of this contest are a potential reference to the Nintendo World Championships. The first iteration of the competition was held in 1990, a year after the film's, which was held in 1989.[1]
  • The presence of block-shaped decorations serve as foreshadowing towards the Overworld, but also resemble the cubes in Q*bert, a popular video game of the era.
  • At one point in development, the date of the event was given as 1988, one year early.[2] It's unknown why it was changed.
    • Garrett is also drawn looking identical to his adult self. It's unclear if this is for the purpose of the storyboards or if he was intended to be far older.
