A Minecraft Movie was filmed in New Zealand.[1]
Production and Filming in New Zealand
Principal photography for A Minecraft Movie was conducted entirely in New Zealand, primarily based in the Auckland region, with on-location shooting in towns such as Huntly and Helensville. Filming occurred from January to April 2024.[2][3]
Auckland served as the production's central hub, where studios and local environments were adapted to represent both real-world and fantastical Minecraft biomes. Huntly doubled for the fictional town of Chuglass, Idaho, while Helensville provided retro-town visuals used in sequences involving an arcade and other character-centric locales. Approximately 85% of the crew were New Zealand-based, with production designer Grant Major (The Lord of the Rings, King Kong) leading the translation of Minecraft’s digital look into physical sets.[2]
A behind-the-scenes documentary titled A Minecraft Movie: Made in New Zealand highlights the scale of local involvement and showcases set construction, design challenges, and the integration of Kiwi talent.[1]
