The Great Darkening was an invasion attempted by Malgosha after blocking the sun of the Overworld using the Orb of Dominance in a beacon frame.

Background

After fulfilling a lifelong wish of exploring a mine, Steve discovered the Earth Cube hidden inside the cavern walls, inadvertently becoming the first human known to enter the Overworld. From there he would spend decades exploring and forming allegiances, until he came across a third dimension, the Nether. By coincidence, he immediately came into contact with Malgosha, who had long desired to discover the secrets of the Orb to acquire gold.

In an attempt to prevent the invasion, Steve gave the Orb to Dennis and instructed him to return it to Earth. However, this gave way to four misfits discovering the Overworld themselves, with one of them accidentally destroying the Earth Crystal. After meeting up with Steve, all five heroes ventured to the woodland mansion to replace the crystal, however they were ambushed by Malgosha and a small group of seekers. In the process, she claimed the Orb, and Garrett was believed to have died in a noble sacrifice.

With the Orb now in the palm of her hands, Malgosha possessed virtually limitless power. Returning to the obsidian gateway, she gave it to Travis who placed it inside of a larger container at the top of the portal. A bright purple beam from the container shot up into the sky, forming dark clouds that blocked out the sun. Immediately, the dimension's balance was shattered, as zombies and skeletons emerged from the shadows ahead of schedule, and Nether wart spread throughout. While this was going on, the four heroes regrouped at the Mushroom Safe House, Steve and Henry taking time to recover from their loss.

As tensions rose, the four return to Midport Village and begin concocting a plan. Using all that he'd learned on the journey, Henry proposes that they construct an army of iron golems, and requests to use the Boots of Swiftness. Steve ventures to a mine to acquire diamonds, and Natalie crafts herself a diamond sword. Dawn uses a series of explosives, powered by redstone, on a group of skeletons. She uses their bones to tame several wolves.

Now readier than ever, the four ventured to the site of the portal, creating a massive army led by the Super Iron Golem. The army marches towards the advancing piglins, but then they stop and stand there idly, not seeing the piglins as a threat. Malgosha comments from the sidelines, saying that iron golems don't attack unless provoked. However, Travis shoots an arrow at the Super Iron Golem's face, drawing the attention of the entire iron golem army. Malgosha expresses her disappointment towards Travis, and the Super Iron Golem swings at him, knocking him far away. The battle then formally begins.

Using his potato launcher, Henry shoots an ender pearl up to the top of the portal, but ends up being attacked by a piglin and nearly falls to his death. In the nick of time, Garrett triumphantly reveals himself, saving Henry using a ghast and turns the tide of the battle.

Wanting to finish what he started, Steve confronts Malgosha himself, clad in a set of diamond armor. Although he is quickly overwhelmed by her powers, Steve emerges triumphant as the portal is destroyed, as Malgosha begins to zombify. Even in her weakened state, she attempts to claim a hollow victory, Steve leaving her to zombify disappointed.

Aftermath

With the beacon destroyed, the battle was ultimately won by the five heroes. It would appear to have been for not, the piglins having left little impact on the realm as they were left to die. The heroes would use the reclaimed Orb to return to the Earth portal, saying goodbye to the Overworld. Upon returning home, they pulled from their experiences to better their own lives, Natalie opening up a dojo and Garrett basing a video game off the conflict. Most of all, Dawn's work with the wolf pack led to her adopting Dennis, becoming very successful.

Trivia

  • The situation in the film is an adaptation of a plotline featured in Minecraft Legends, wherein the Orb of Dominance was used to create the Night Beacon, with a similar effect on the Overworld. In the context of the game, this is an inciting incident that causes creatures such as zombies and creepers to fight against the piglins, but in the film the problem is resolved by the heroes and iron golems alone.
